Freddy’s Ribhouse

November 20, 2009

Chicago may not need another rib joint to chew on but isn’t complaining about Freddy’s. At this handsome oak bar, with exposed brick walls and vintage photos of Chicago, the ribs are as good and varied. Baby back ribs are fall-off-the-bone tender. Beef ribs, meaty and flavourful from slow cooking, make a nice change of pace, as does moist charbroiled chicken. Sandwiches include BBQ brisket and pulled pork. Side dishes include fried potatoes sprinkled with seasonings.

Gypsy

November 10, 2009

The Publick Theatre ends its 30th summer season of theatre under the stars with a production of the Arthur Laurents, Jule Styne and Stephen Sondheim classic ‘Gypsy’. The musical, which features such songs as ‘Everything’s Coming Up Roses’ and ‘Let Me Entertain You’, tells the story of Gypsy Rose Lee and her career in vaudeville and burlesque.

The Scottish Colourists

September 17, 2009

Christened the ‘Colourists’ due to their unashamedly bold use of pure colour, the work of Fergusson, Cadell, Hunter and Peploe brightens up an otherwise dreary winter.

Ridiculously Deep

May 4, 2009

A new Thursday night event at cinema-club Schikaneder, Ridiculously Deep is a chilled evening of Brazillian sounds, enjoyed from the relative comfort of leatherette three-piece suites or the busy bar. Classics from the bossa pantheon trade places with outthere fusions, snatches of devotional music and a substantial dose of the currently fashionable remixed variety pumped out on German labels such as Compost. Being a cinema, the accent is also on the moving image with projections of scenes from the green heart of America, cinema novo and anything the cuartors can scrape up. A cheap night out in Vienna’s kicking Freihausviertel.

Yann Arthus-Bertrand

April 21, 2009

On display in this spectacular exhibition are the landscapes of the planet as seen from the sky. Over the last ten years, Arthus-Bertrand has spent 3,000 hours flight-time in a helicopter and visited 76 countries in order to gather over 100,000 photos of the earth’s surface. The photographs on display in ‘The Earth From the Sky’ include shots of beautiful abstract forms of nature, the humanised landscape of cities and dwellings and frightening vistas of destruction and disaster.

Noites do Brasil

February 18, 2009

Brazilian music and culture is all the rage in Paris right now, and the Latin spirit takes over the Divan du Monde every Thursday, Friday and Saturday during this summer. The hot nights start early with a live concert, followed by DJs spinning samba or batucada, as well as traditional and modern Latin pop. A summer treat to hold you over until the city repopulates after the August heat.

This is what I learnt

February 5, 2009

- Wrap your clothes in dry cleaner’s plastic and they won’t need re-ironing when you get home.

- Backpack the world with your man before you get married – best way to find out what he’s really like!
