A solo recital of improvisations, classical Arabic pieces and original compositions on the oud (Arab lute).
Bruno Serralongue
January 25, 2010Blurring the line between standard photojournalism and art, French artist Serralongue shows two series of works Destination Vegas and Sunday afternoon. Part of Vivre Sa Vie.
A Tuna Christmas
January 18, 2010Spend the holidays with the citizens of tiny Tuna, Texas, where the Lion’s Club is too liberal and Patsy Cline never dies. In the second of their Tuna trilogy, comedians Joe Sears and Jaston Williams use deft comedic timing and split-second costume changes to bring all 24 citizens of Tuna to the stage. These include Didi Snaverley, used-weapons shop proprietor who has decked her halls with Uzis, grenades and switchblades, and Baptist extraordinaire Vera Carp, whose yard nativity scene features life-sizes statues of Bing Crosby and Natalie Wood.
Paradiso@Diaspora
January 11, 2010One of the goals of this exhibition is to explode the myths surrounding contemporary Jewish culture and ‘lay bare the commercialisation of Jewish life’. Bringing together dozens of young artists from Germany and Italy, including the radical Berlin-based group Meshulasha, ‘Paradiso@Diaspora’ is the centrepiece of this year’s Festival of Jewish Culture. Aiming to be both diverse and provocative, it includes video installations, painting, sculpture and photography.
The Dinner Game
December 28, 2009The thriving English theatre scene pays cheeky homage to its host city in the latest production from the Dear Conjunction Theatre Company – a new English version of Francis Veber’s hit play ‘Le Dîner de cons’. The premise is well known – a self-important publisher invites a well-meaning cretin to dinner so that he and other pretentious friends can make fun of him, but his evening’s entertainment hilariously backfires.
Moo Moo
October 20, 2009Next to the beautiful Novodevichy monastery, Moo Moo is a delightful children’s restaurant dressed as a welcoming farmer’s kitchen. Large black and white spots come straight off the cows to decorate the tables, chairs and napkins. The cook squeezes inside a fairy tale house to prepare the food and the menu is heavily milk-based, pancakes with sweetened condensed milk for 40 rubles is a local favourite. The food is very reasonable with dishes from 15 to 142 rubles.
The Third Shanghai Biennale
July 31, 2009Shanghai’s foremost contemporary art event has come a long way in just four years. This year works by more than 70 artists will fill both the old and new Shanghai Art Museums. The exhibition’s thread of continuity is supplied by the ‘Shanghai Spirit’ theme, but how exactly this applies to the 30 or so foreign contributing artists (including Anish Kapoor and Anselm Kiefer) will be interesting to see. Established local stars to look out for include Zhang Peili, Wang Qiang and Shui Jianguo.
Gelateria Nico
July 12, 2009A gelateria with a view, Nico’s serves fine ice creams and a host of other more savoury snacks to hungry Venetians on their passeggiata along the Zattere fondamenta. Don’t leave town without trying their calorie busting Gianduiotto, a fist-sized block of chocolate and hazlenut icecream plunged into a cup of freshly-whipped thick cream. You’ll be needing a walk after that one. And if you get marooned on the canal side terrace during high water, just shout loud and the waiter will bring you some rubber boots.
Raquel Bitton
July 1, 2009French jazz singer and recording artist Raquel Bitton performs her critically acclaimed show, ‘Edith Piaf, Her Story? Her Songs’, that has played to sold-out houses across America. Bitton tells stories of Piaf’s life that mirror the timeless songs which catapulted Piaf from a child singing in the streets of Paris to one of the highest paid entertainers in the world. Sung in French and backed by a 20-piece orchestra, Bitton’s tribute to the ‘little sparrow’ is a moving and emotional journey.
Ice Factory
April 25, 2009The coolest DJ around is Kulu. With his long whispy beard and piercing eyes he could be an ancient Chinese mystic. And with his stunning collection of the rarest of funky grooves, he is one of the biggest names in Hong Kong club circles at the moment. With Kid Cal and Oaky playing a mixture of rap and old skool killas in the other room, this is one for the more discerning crowd.
