Gelateria Nico
July 12, 2009A gelateria with a view, Nico’s serves fine ice creams and a host of other more savoury snacks to hungry Venetians on their passeggiata along the Zattere fondamenta. Don’t leave town without trying their calorie busting Gianduiotto, a fist-sized block of chocolate and hazlenut icecream plunged into a cup of freshly-whipped thick cream. You’ll be needing a walk after that one. And if you get marooned on the canal side terrace during high water, just shout loud and the waiter will bring you some rubber boots.
The Church
March 9, 2009It was 20 years ago today (or thereabouts) that The Church began life as one of Australia’s most original bands. With Steve Kilbey’s surreal lyrics woven around a whole bunch of jangly guitar chords and shimmering lead lines, the band made solid impressions in the UK and the US during the 1980s. However, contractual stints with Warner and Arista never resulted in the mega-selling albums record companies love, and the boys have retreated to doing what they do best – their own thing at their own pace.
Sydney Metropolis
March 7, 2009The first of three exhibitions that will display different facets of Sydney life, ‘Sydney Metropolis’ explores the moods of the metropolitan district through a collection of 80 paintings, drawings and photographs by artists, photographers and architects. Their reactions are as varied as their occupations and the times they worked in; some see the city as a place of unsafe shadows inhabited by phantoms while others see a bright, shining utopia among the piecemeal and sometimes disastrous urban planning.
This is what I learnt
February 5, 2009- Wrap your clothes in dry cleaner’s plastic and they won’t need re-ironing when you get home.
- Backpack the world with your man before you get married – best way to find out what he’s really like!
Getting the word out while in Russia
January 18, 2009In most cases its easy to telephone from the telegraph office. Phoning from the telegraph office in Omsh isn’t to be recommended, we spent an unsuccessful afternoon there. We gave up and tried to fax England and were told it was US$20 per page (whereas in Kurgan it had only been US$3 per page). We expected similar problems in Novosibirsk but it proved relatively easy to contact England from the telegraph office (cost US$1.50 for one minute).
Posting parcels can take a long time. Don’t wrap parcels, there is a counter at the post office for wrapping. Moscow is the most difficult place to send parcels from as they can only be sent from the international post office. The process involves firstly buying custom declaration forms, then going to the customs office, then going to the wrapping counter and then going to the weighing and paying counter. In smaller towns there is less bureaucracy.
