Gelateria Nico

July 12, 2009

A gelateria with a view, Nico’s serves fine ice creams and a host of other more savoury snacks to hungry Venetians on their passeggiata along the Zattere fondamenta. Don’t leave town without trying their calorie busting Gianduiotto, a fist-sized block of chocolate and hazlenut icecream plunged into a cup of freshly-whipped thick cream. You’ll be needing a walk after that one. And if you get marooned on the canal side terrace during high water, just shout loud and the waiter will bring you some rubber boots.

Camden Town

May 31, 2009

Just in case you left your party suit back home, this tiny shop just off the Ramblas specialises in ‘erotic fashions’, primarily ultra-slick PVC clothes for men and women. Skirts, tops, slacks and dresses are all available in various shapes, sizes and colours. A sister shop of similarly sleek apparel exists on the other side of the Ramblas in the Centro Comercial Gralla Hall at C/Portaferrissa 25. What the shop says about Spanish conceptions of the London market that inspires its name can only be guesssed at.

Sydney Metropolis

March 7, 2009

The first of three exhibitions that will display different facets of Sydney life, ‘Sydney Metropolis’ explores the moods of the metropolitan district through a collection of 80 paintings, drawings and photographs by artists, photographers and architects. Their reactions are as varied as their occupations and the times they worked in; some see the city as a place of unsafe shadows inhabited by phantoms while others see a bright, shining utopia among the piecemeal and sometimes disastrous urban planning.

Yasumasa Morimura

March 1, 2009

Photographer Yasumasa Morimura grew up imbued with Eastern and Western, traditional and modern cultural values – something that stamped ambiguity onto his work. ‘History of Art’ is a series of digitally manipulated photographs, using masterpieces of western painting as a starting point. Morimura appropriates the ‘western’ aspects then adapts and converts them into something entirely of his own. Thus, Morimuri himself appears superimposed onto a Van Gogh self-portrait or Goya’s ‘The Third of May, Madrid 1808′ to produce a masterly metaphor, his personal settling of scores with the colonialist west.

Saint Etienne

February 26, 2009

Brit electro-popsters Saint Etienne are back with a vengeance, whizzing around the globe in between studio sessions for their next album, due out in the year 2000. The only band in the world who could come up with a song titled ‘Kofi Annan’ (no wonder their ‘Like a Motorway’ is the call sign for the news on Yugoslavia’s rebellious B-92 radio station, closed down by Slobodan Milosevic) are releasing their single ‘Lover Plays the Bass’ all over the place, in between a US album and a fan-club release. And In the middle of all of that, they’ve even managed a New York date to keep the college crowd sweet on them.

EasyEverything

February 2, 2009

All visitors to Amsterdam should know that the world’s cheapest cybercafé chain has just opened up here. A mere f2.50 buys a single time unit which could provide you – depending on how busy it is – with between a half-hour and five hours of surfing time. With 650 terminals, this particular branch is also the world’s largest cybercafé- that is, until EasyEverything opens an even larger franchise on NYC’s Times Square in October.

Summer Sales

December 18, 2008

It’s worth trying to catch the end of the summer sales this week. Bargains are certainly to be had not least because the exchange rate of lire to pound is still so good. As the Florentines push off out of the city in August, there is no one around to scoop up the last bargains. For designer-wear, scour the chic shops (Prada, Gucci, Armani et al) around Via Tornabuoni and Via della Vigna Nuova. Mark-downs are often much more generous than those in Britain.
