This Italian linen house, founded in the 1850s, has opened a boutique on Oak Street, Chicago’s haven for designer labels. It offers the company’s signature linens as well as its collection of fragrances for the home, scented candles, sachets and a recently introduced line of luxury at-home clothing. Suppliers to the Italian royal family, Frette is best known for ‘jacquard’ print bedding of 300-600 thread count Egyptian cotton and linen. Originally, the House of Frette introduced ‘jacquard’ looms as an efficient means of producing detailed luxury products.
Hungrige Herzen
February 18, 2010The celebrated drag artist and singer Sherry Vine jets in from New York City to make a special appearance at this popular midweek bash at Kreuzberg’s S036 club. Known for its upbeat atmosphere and euphoric beats, Hungry Hearts draws a happy and youthful crowd of (mainly) gay men and lesbians. Other music this week comes courtesy of resident house DJs Soulcamp and Marco Braun.
Café Kafka
February 7, 2010At this café you get jazz to accompany the drinks instead of food. The Kafka is a dark and gloomy establishment of the type that Brussels aficionados love. It’s worth passing by just to appreciate the long mirror that stretches along the wall at the back. Free jazz concerts are held on a regular basis, so watch out for posters or just call and check. Not surprisingly, there’s a slightly Kafkaesque feel to the place which can be alleviated by trying some of the 50 beers, 20 vodkas and 10 variations of genièvre.
A Cheery Soul
February 2, 2010In an inspired twist Neil Armfield, the Artistic Director of the innovative Company Business, will direct Robyn Nevin, the Artistic Director of the Sydney Theatre Company, in the lead role of Miss Docker in Patrick White’s ‘A Cheery Soul’. Written in 1962, the play has always been a hit when revived. It’s a dark and ironic comic story of a relentlessly cheerful woman who dominates the small town of Sarsaparilla.
Bruno Serralongue
January 25, 2010Blurring the line between standard photojournalism and art, French artist Serralongue shows two series of works Destination Vegas and Sunday afternoon. Part of Vivre Sa Vie.
A Tuna Christmas
January 18, 2010Spend the holidays with the citizens of tiny Tuna, Texas, where the Lion’s Club is too liberal and Patsy Cline never dies. In the second of their Tuna trilogy, comedians Joe Sears and Jaston Williams use deft comedic timing and split-second costume changes to bring all 24 citizens of Tuna to the stage. These include Didi Snaverley, used-weapons shop proprietor who has decked her halls with Uzis, grenades and switchblades, and Baptist extraordinaire Vera Carp, whose yard nativity scene features life-sizes statues of Bing Crosby and Natalie Wood.
The Dinner Game
December 28, 2009The thriving English theatre scene pays cheeky homage to its host city in the latest production from the Dear Conjunction Theatre Company – a new English version of Francis Veber’s hit play ‘Le Dîner de cons’. The premise is well known – a self-important publisher invites a well-meaning cretin to dinner so that he and other pretentious friends can make fun of him, but his evening’s entertainment hilariously backfires.
Black Nativity
December 25, 2009The annual production of Langston Hughes’ ‘Black Nativity’ at the Lorraine Hansberry Theater is one of the most uplifting holiday experiences around. The renowned poet and playwright’s interpretation of the Nativity is brought to life with the sound of a full choir and live accompaniment. The song-play is based on African American traditions of dance, gospel music, verse and the Bible. Hughes splits the performance into two parts – the Christmas nativity and a rousing celebration of gospel music.
The Chimp Project
December 17, 2009Set in the Congo Republic, ‘The Chimp Project’ is about Lisa, an adolescent, sexually aware chimp, trained in the art of sign language who has out grown Jo’berg and her career in TV commercials. Sonya, Lisa’s human flatmate whisks her away to a rehabilitation sanctuary in the Congo where Lisa shocks a young primatologist with her taste for fags, gin and junk food. The play explores the power of language through a brilliant mix of puppet, actors and video animation that has made the Handspring Puppet Company internationally famous.
