Guided Tours in English

January 12, 2010

Visitors to Rome have never had it so good. Museums have been restored, opening times extended and squares, bridges and ancient ruins expertly illuminated. Now free guided walks have been laid on in English for those who want something a little off the beaten track. There are tours of the churches and parks of the Aventine hill (Nov 12), a walk which takes in Caravaggio’s Roman masterpieces (Nov 18) and another one which uncovers the secrets of the ancient Jewish ghetto (Dec 10). Definitely worth the trek.

Paradiso@Diaspora

January 11, 2010

One of the goals of this exhibition is to explode the myths surrounding contemporary Jewish culture and ‘lay bare the commercialisation of Jewish life’. Bringing together dozens of young artists from Germany and Italy, including the radical Berlin-based group Meshulasha, ‘Paradiso@Diaspora’ is the centrepiece of this year’s Festival of Jewish Culture. Aiming to be both diverse and provocative, it includes video installations, painting, sculpture and photography.

City Café 317

January 7, 2010

Close to the White House, home of the Prime Minister’s government, 317 is a new restaurant that is aiming for the middle. The interior is an Ikea jumble sale and the crowd is more arty than political, but the food is hearty, reasonably priced Russian and Georgian fare. The cabbage soup shchi is a winner as are the mains. The fine Czech beer Paulaner is on tap but there are also several good Russian ones.

Memento

January 6, 2010

Ingenious thriller, which unspools in reverse, about a man (Guy Pearce) suffering memory loss attempting to track down his wife’s murderer. New British talent Christopher Nolan directs.

National Finals Rodeo

January 4, 2010

It’s all yee-haw and howdy pardner, as the biggest and most important cowboy competition of the year comes to Las Vegas for the 16th consecutive time. They aren’t riding bulls and roping calves for nothing, and one look at all the chi-chi trucks in the casino car parks and pricey blue jeans tightly adhering to the so-called ‘belt buckle babes’ illustrates that. The coming of the NFR also unleashes a stable of citywide activity, from country-western music concerts to holiday gift fairs. The NFR proudly makes Las Vegas a real cow town again.

All About Almodóvar

January 3, 2010

All 13 of Pedro Almodóvar’s feature films are on show in Barcelona over Christmas as the Filmoteca runs a retrospective cycle on the work of Spain’s most emblematic moviemaker. Early films like ‘Pepi, Luci, Bom’ and ‘Labyrinth of Passion’ are getting a rare big-screen projection, along with his better-known later work – all in Spanish without subtitles. A discussion session with the presence of the director himself is programmed, but a date has not yet been confirmed.
