Cajun-influenced food is what’s on the menu at Tante Zoe’s. Despite the fact that the actual restaurant now seems a little dated, it does have its plus points – it’s great for large numbers and the Sunday brunch is rumoured to be the best-tasting (and best value) in town, with live jazz from 4pm. There is a great range of veggie options, as well as lots of Jambalaya and blackened meat items. Authenticity is a bit hit-and-miss but it all tastes good. Another plus is the full licence and a ‘semi-private’ dining room downstairs.
Chinese Karakters
September 17, 2008This broad programme of more than 20 videos, documentaries and films attempts to paint a picture of modern China and the sweeping changes that are underway there. The focus is not only social (the changing role of women and the coming out of homosexuals, for instance) – there’s also an exploration of the current state of dance, theatre, visual art and multimedia. The subtitles are in English.
Lola Rennt
September 12, 2008Lola (Franka Potente) has 20 minutes to find 100,000 marks before her boyfriend gets killed. Since her dad’s a banker, things ought to be simple – but her attempts to take control of the situation are hampered by unforeseen events. A banging techno soundtrack, bleak Berlin locations and stylised ultra-violence characterise this pleasantly surprising German film. Subtler and more serious than its first 25 minutes would suggest, it queries the determining role of chance in life, love and death. Energetic and great fun. (In German with French subtitles.)
Prague International Marathon
September 10, 2008Running through Prague’s cobbled streets is normally thought of as a hazardous proposition, but not to the hundreds who fly in from around the world for this wildly popular annual foot race. Six separate races make up the core of the PIM: superjocks take on the full 42km run, a feat later repeated by in-line skaters and then younger runners; amateurs can break themselves in with the 9km City Run; and whole families go for the 4.5km run, later repeated as the Eco-Day run. The live nationwide coverage and pumped-up crowds are almost as much incentive as scoring that jersey number to take home afterwards. Registration takes place in the PIM tent at the bottom of Wenceslas Square.
Bisso Na Bisso
September 7, 200820 years after rap’s birth in the Bronx, hip hoppers everywhere are still trying to tackle its tricky Oedipal relationship with mother Africa. Parisian Passi and his booming eight-strong outfit work it out better than most, with spot-on earthy lyrics and a lilting calypso edge that has already earned their ace new album, ‘Les Racines’, a place in the car stereos of countless Parisian yoofs.
